“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24).
There is a story in the Bible about David and Bathsheba. (2 Samuel 11). The story is about adultery and murder. As we read the horrible transgression of David, we assume that this sin will certainly condemn David to eternal damnation; but King David repented and asked the Lord to forgive him for his transgression. The Lord forgave David, but there was still a consequence he paid for his action. Bathsheba had conceived a child during the time of David’s transgression; as a result the baby died a few days after its birth. However, afterwards David married Bathsheba and she conceived another child and his name was Solomon, who became David’s successor and was appointed to the Kingship.
Yet, when we read in the book of Chronicles, the book of records, King David’s transgression with Bathsheba and the murdering of her husband, Uriah is not recorded. In contrast, David took a census, numbering the people, which God considered a great offence and a Spiritual Transgression. How is this census transgression greater than the adultery and murder transgression? Well, the answer is because one transgression is on a spiritual level and the other is on a carnal level. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24).
The Bible is spiritual and God is a Spirit. God is concerned with a man’s heart and his deepest love that pertains to God’s will, power, authority and kingdom, “Only what you do for Christ will be counted”. Our motives, and the results and the character of our actions.
Fleshly sins have to do with temporal things. Such as, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying, murders, drunkenness and reveling.” (Galatians 5:19-21). All these thing have nothing to do with God’s kingdom. “Such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Galatians 5:21). Judgment and condemnation is already here! “So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” (Romans 8:8). No matter how great a person is in the flesh, it is already condemned. None of these fleshly acts are accredited by God because remember, God is a Spirit. However, please don’t think that fleshly sins are overlooked by God because every individual’s works in his life will be judged before Christ.
More importantly, Spiritual Transgressions are a direct insult and violation to the Spirit and kingdom of God. The spiritual man is the one who will be judged on Judgment Day. “For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” (Galatians 6:8). In other words, when a person spends all their life reaping in the flesh and not honoring God in Spirit and in truth, he will reap corruption. Fighting for gender rights for the flesh is corruption to God. If a person spends his life following God’s Word and honoring God in spirit and in truth, he will reap everlasting life.
Look closer, David’s fleshly sin with Bathsheba is not even recorded, it has already been condemned by the Law. The flesh is judged by the Law. (Read Galatians 5:16-18). God does not take this matter up concerning Eternal Life. The Spiritual man is judged by means of his heart! Whether it be wicked or righteous! How are we measured in the Spirit? We are measured by our fruits: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such there is no law. These fruits can only be acquired in Christ. So if one thinks he’s loving and good without the Holy Spirit he is deceiving himself. Only through repentance and being baptized in the Holy Spirit can these gifts be attained.
Satan is not concerned about our flesh sinning against God, but Satan is focused on our heart and our obedience to God. If our flesh rules our heart and not the Spirit of God, then we are judged under the law, which will condemn us to hell. Satan’s objectivity is to get our minds and heart off of God and into sin and trouble.
Now, let’s turn our attention back to David’s Spiritual Transgression. It seems harmless, doesn’t it? What was the problem of taking a census? Moses had taken a Census of the people on two occasions. In the Book of Numbers we are told that Moses took a census at the beginning of the Wilderness March and at the end of the Wilderness March. There was nothing wrong with that, at least God did not find fault with that. But when King David took a census it is believed that the reason King David did this was because he was proud. But we will examine this Spiritual Transgression closer.
Here’s where the Spiritual Transgression is performed, King David wanted statistics. He was judging his power by statistics, and not by the power of God, which he was already dependent! David had always faithfully depended on God. Now he’s counting how many warriors there are ready for battle among his people! Although pride could have been partly true, but it is not the total explanation of the transgression. “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let not the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glory in this, that he understand and know me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24). God was not please when David took a census because David was not delighting in the Lord; he was delighting in his own might. The Spiritual Transgression that motivated David to number the people was the awful transgression of UNBELIEF. David was trusting in numbers instead of trusting in God.
We do not need elaborate plans or depend on our own wisdom, because we have a Guide and Friend that will direct us as need requires, and if we acknowledge him in our ways he will make our path straight. “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Cor. 12: 9-10). When we disobey God’s plan and his grace and his power, we end up in failure. People are trusting in the wrong people and the wrong things today. David’s sin was UNBELIEF! It was in his heart and that is wicked in the sight of God. God is concerned with the heart and not the flesh! Many are an offence to God because their hearts are in the world and the lust thereof.
It’s really tragic when we point our fingers at fleshly sins, adultery, drunkenness, sexual sins, liar, murders, and so on. But a person could walk into our Sunday Morning Service in UNBELIEF, and no one would be the wiser! If this person’s UNBELIEF was known this would not be considered a serious matter! God is telling us that he considers UNBELIEF the most serious matter.
Satan is always behind unbelief. It is the main reason why those who are fighting over GENDER MATTERS are so confident that God is not going to do anything to them. They even attend service every Sunday. Their UNBELIEF is their SPIRITUAL TRANSGRESSION and this is what concerns God! Satan puts UNBELIEF into the hearts and minds of the lost, so that they will not put their trust in God. Satan is always urging them to put our trust in men and their laws, in armies, in money, in anything but God.
The flesh is under a set of laws. The Spirit is under God’s commands. David knew his God since he was a little shepherd boy tending to his father’s sheep. He was a man after God’s own heart! Read the beautiful Psalms that David wrote. He loved the Lord and he honored the Lord and he trusted the Lord! Then David violated a trust that he always had in God, he committed this Spiritual Transgression: “And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people.” (2 Samuel 24:10). Also, as a result of David’s Spiritual Transgression, thousand dies. David knew his God. He sees now what he has done. He remembered how he had trusted God with five stones and a sling. The God he trusted is all of his battles and victories.
Let us all understand the severity of Spiritual Transgressions. How many will die because of impatience and independence, self-will and lack of trust in God? It is the worst offence to God. It is written, “Without faith it is impossible to please God. We must be assured in our faith in God because it is a great Spiritual Transgression to believe otherwise. HAVE FAITH IN JESUS!
Amen and amen again!
