“This is all that I have learned: God made us plain and simple, but we have made ourselves very complicated.” (Ecclesiastes 7:29). (GNB).

I believe that God made every human being unique in character and physical design. There are no two people alike, even if they are so-called identical twins. There is still a uniqueness about each one of them. How is it then that so many people try so hard to become like someone else? Many people spend their whole life trying to be like their idols! I have seen people who have gone to the extreme of having painful surgery and mutilating their face and body to look like some high-profile person. In addition, they begin mimicking their idols’ every word, and going bankrupt to dress like them. Losing their own unique identity, to foolishly create a replica of another unique individual. Now, I must ask the question, how many “Elvis Presley’s and Michael Jackson’s” did God make? For everyone who have abandoned their own uniqueness, the world is missing their contribution to mankind. Trust me, the world only needed one Elvis and Michael! Their contributions to world were limited to fleshly musical celebrity. They did not offer humanity salvation or eternal life. They were not crucified for humanity. The God we must face on the Day of Judgment, is the same God they will have to face too! But I say, Just Be Your Holy Self! Why try to steal someone else’s accomplishments or God given design? Why complicate your life by such a great pretense? God gave us all a part of his holiness, which is activated by faith in God. It is then and only then that our holy uniqueness is unveiled through the power of the Holy Spirit.

We make our lives complicated by inventing appearances of greatness. Many strive to be the center of attraction. In doing so, we become unpleasant competitors and insufferable individuals. I can recall a young woman I knew many years ago when I was in seminary training. She was always hanging around me, and pretending to support me going forward to my ordination. Well, her bogus support was just her way of filtering me out, and to challenge me and block me from being ordained. Her envy of my holiness led her to corrupt the minds of others, which delayed, not stopped, my ordination. It could be said that God allowed her to do this because he had a different path for me to take. Personally, I believe that to be true. However, the Lord knew her heart was full of envy and her desire to become a minister. I asked myself the question, why couldn’t she just take the course I took and get her training? But I now understand that it was my holiness she wanted.  She was trying to acquire a spiritual ability that did not belong to her! As a result, my calling and my assigned ministry had become a competition, which I did not know I was competing in. “Just Be Your Holy Self!” She tried to rob me of my calling and the uniqueness that God gave to me. She did everything she could to overshadow and imitate the uniqueness that God planted in me. As we all are, I was designed with a unique character and a gospel delivery style that no one else has; and even if imitated, no one can duplicate my holiness. God has the creativity and the ability to make each of us unique. Even the snowflakes are unique, not one of them is the same.

There is not a human on earth or in the grave that can duplicate the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made on Golgotha. Yes, many try with great illusions of holiness, but it is not real. “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and will all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” ( II Thess. 2:9-10). There are and were great saints who have and are working in the kingdom of God, but never as great and unique as Jesus Christ. Jesus tells us to follow his example of love and faith. Jesus loves unconditionally and perfectly, man does not. However, it is through God’s love and faith that a person’s holiness increases. Therefore, if a person’s love and faith is shallow, then their holiness is shallow. On the other hand, if a person’s faith is strong, they can move mountains in the name of Jesus. ‘Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said Why could not we case him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for very I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” (Matthew 17:19-20).  Thereby, even if someone tries to duplicate your ministry and your spiritual gifts, they do not possess the same height of love and faith the doer of good works has, “Just Be Your Holy Self!

What disturbs my spirit to sorrow is the competition factor that goes on with some of the church leaders. I am just going to say it, “They make me sick deep down inside!” It has become about wealth and membership! They use their congregants to praise themselves and to elevate their self-worth, and it’s disgusting! I pray earnestly that we all let God use us according to his design; and let’s stop trying to be like some beloved old dead clergy! Everyone child of God has gifts to use at a given time in history. If we spend our moments trying to mimic or out do someone else’s ministry, we miss our opportunity to release what God has planted in us for the good of the Body of Christ! Just Be Your Holy Self! Please let God be God in your life! It is useless and unbeneficial to the Body of Christ, if you are trying to duplicate someone else who has already been or is! The Church needs every individual’s gift. There will never be a replica of your beloved clergy. Therefore, allow God to use your uniqueness to glorify Himself and to strengthen the Body of Christ with the freshness and holiness of You!

There is one Lord, one faith and one baptism! Jesus Christ will be imitated poorly in the future, by the prince of darkness, but he will fail because there is only one Jesus Christ. “Let no one deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition: Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” (II Thess 2:3-4). We must to be so careful not to be deceived by imitators of holiness. May the holiness of our God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, be your sword and shield. In the holiness of God, Just Be Your Holy Self!

For the record, this written for those who are calling for spiritual holiness and God’s original plan of Salvation. Also, to dismiss and rebuke unholy inventions and duplicators of holiness, who complicate our spiritual journey home! God bless you and amen!

  1. Hello Rev. Jessica. How sad to think there are ‘followers of Christ’ actually following man. In a way, you should be flattered that someone saw in you a uniqueness that compelled her to mimic, especially when your life style was God centered. Let’s pray for her that her mindset will be redirected towards Christ and less concentrated on man. Man can fail, but God can do anything BUT fail. Amen!

    1. Praise the Lord! It is truly sad that man is chasing after the flesh. But unfortunately this is true. As for the woman mimicking me, I find no flattery in envy or jealousy. If her desire was to be mentored, I would have gladly shared my knowledge and experiences with her. But her intent was to remove me and put herself in my place. The author in the book of Eccl. was speaking of people who use deceptive devices to take from others. This is the point of my example of the woman, who was a deceiver and not a Christian sister. God bless you and thank you for your very inspiring comment.
